Good Shepherd Kindergarten

After three years of offering secondary education, we realized that the educational foundation of the students was shaky. As an answer, in February 2010, we began Good Shepherd Kindergarten, which is administered by KSVI. Two mature teachers were hired. Because students in Uganda begin school at different ages, our kindergarten children range in age from 3 – 9 years. They begin with a typical pre-school curriculum, but learn to read, write, and work with simple numbers before they graduate. They also learn discipline and respect for their elders and contemporaries.

The good news is that in December, nine children graduated! These 9 students met the graduating standard of being ready to attend Primary 1 classes. The local public school these children will attend is Rwengoro Primary School, an approximate 10 minute walk from KSVI. Rwengoro offers Primary grades 1-7. Upon successful completion of these grades, a student could return to KSVI for secondary school.

It is a sad fact in Uganda that many families do not send their children to primary school since they have no hope of being able to afford the costs of secondary school, and they have seen that a primary education alone is inadequate. Secondary schools in Uganda are private. We certainly hope to see our recent graduates back at KSVI in the future. Please pray for their continued education! They are part of Uganda's future!
