Exciting KSVI Well and Cistern Update
We are moving forward with this project and, God willing, hope to have the construction completed by this summer!!!! Right now we are waiting to see if significant funding from a non-profit we have been working with comes through. Our plan is to have the well dug close proximity to the school buildings. It will be powered by an electric pump. We expect this well will provide water for our approximate 200 students and 18 staff members for cooking, cleaning, and drinking. It will have the capacity to serve up to 1000 students in the future.
We are working with Sandra Atukunda, an engineer and friend of John Mulindabigwi's whom he has mentored over the years. Sandra normally does this type of work for large organizations. The pump for the well will be housed in its own building, for security purposes. We will use a larger generator for this pump. At this point, we expect the water will be pumped into 2 8000-liter holding tanks. This set-up will mean the pump will not have to run continuously and will also allow for periodic tank cleaning. We look forward to water being piped to the health clinic, the teachers' houses, the girls' dorm, and eventually, the boys' dorm (when it is completed).
Our cistern was dug in 2010 and remains partially complete. We expect to channel and catch large amounts of rainwater from the roofs of buildings at KSVI during rainy seasons. Water from the cistern will be used to water crops, in making mortar and bricks by the masonry classes, to provide water for the animals, and as a back-up for the well. Due to escalating costs for cement and other building materials, we were unable to complete the cistern as planned in 2010. Completing the cistern remains very much a part of our total Clean Water Project.
We cannot thank God enough for your prayers, interest, and support in this project! Thank you!
